The art of SEO is complex and always changing as Google alters its algorithm. What works one day can change another day, so it’s important to really be up-to-date with all the information related to SEO.
How do I increase my site’s ranking in Google?
However, there are three really important pieces of advice that I can give:
- Design your website well. Provide good and original content. Google likes good websites as it wants its users to have a good experience. Always keep that at the forefront of your mind. While a well designed and original website might not rank in google, a poorly designed and unoriginal site will almost certainly rank poorly.
- Make sure it’s mobile friendly. Nowadays, more and more people are accessing websites from their mobile devices. If your website isn’t mobile optimised then Google won’t want mobile users to find it. While your site may still do OK for desktop traffic, you’re really just hurting yourself.
- Don’t be tempted by fake SEO ‘experts’. The multitude of people offering to sell you “1000 backlinks for $5” is all over the internet. If it was that easy to have your site ranked as #1 on Google, then everyone would do it – and then who would be number 1? Spammy back links don’t work and are far more likely to penalise your site than help it. When seeking help with SEO for your site, it’s best to look for reputable companies with proven track records. As a starting point, can you find the SEO company’s website on Google? If they can’t work SEO for themselves, how will they be able to do it for you?
There are some very very good people and companies around that can help you with your SEO. There are many companies that that will charge you to run your SEO and this may be an option for you particularly if you just don’t have time. As per the advice above, be careful when selecting an SEO consultant as you not only risk wasting your money but potentially damaging your website’s ranking.
Perhaps the starting point, before paying anyone, is to understand how SEO works and to analyse the data of successful websites. There’s a wealth of information on the internet, so it can be hard to work out what is good and what isn’t, so I have included a small, but not exhaustive list of resources.
If you like looking at data (as I do) then you’ll find the spy tools listed below (Similarweb and KeyWordSpy) fascinating to look at. You can use these to spy on your competitor’s campaigns, learn what words their website ranks for and which websites are providing referral traffic. These are fascinating at the free level (go check it out) but are just another level of amazing at the Pro level.
